Dominican Francisca Villar runs for Mayor

October 19th, 2009 · 6 Comments · Culture, My Hood

Applaud this woman.
Obviously, she has no shot of winning the race, but to see an intelligent, ambitious Dominican woman running for such high public office is inspiring.
“A mother of two, a student and political activist, she wants to give a voice to those who don’t have one.”
More info on her

Dominican Chronicles Vol 7: Dominican Politicians.

September 18th, 2009 · 2 Comments · My Hood, Politics

I think the worst time to live in the Heights/Inwood for me is when there are local elections. It really is.
For all you new residents, I know you can’t stand the noise coming from Mister Softee, salsa blaring from radios late night, and motorcycles. But me? I’m used to all this. I don’t even [...]

September 17th, 2009 · No Comments · Mi Vida, My Hood

Thank you to everyone who came out to Vol. 2 at the beautiful Garden Cafe.
The convo on Obama, our littering and noise pollution local politicians, and everything else local was great.
Till next time…

Dyckman Cultura Fest

September 9th, 2009 · 2 Comments · My Hood

As my friend over at Manhattan Speak would say, I wouldn’t necessarily call it a “culture fest, but more of a street fair.”
All in all, it was my first time attending this event in Dyckman and I really enjoyed myself. It was nice to see something like this in our neighborhood.
Everyone seemed to get along [...]

If you didn’t already know, I recently launched a Wahi/Inwood Brunch & Supper Club which will meet once a month. It will bring together the young professionals of our area and help foster relationships between young/old and east/west of our neighborhoods.
The idea was inspired by Elaine Walker, who had similar success with a club [...]

I was 8 years old when this occurred. Didn’t understand what was going on, but I knew it wasn’t the norm.
I know I can be extra critical of my own (Dominicans) on this blog, but I can’t say there was any day I ever read about in my people’s history in the United States [...]

The death of Glendalis Pagan and domestic violence in the Dominican community.

June 19th, 2009 · Comments Off · Culture, My Hood

It was only a few months ago, when I was in the barber shop I regularly attend and walked into a conversation where a middle aged man and a few younger ones said they had no problem hitting a woman.
‘Si me encojona, le voy das si estoy en mala,’ said a few of them [...]

Review of 4/29 Inwood & 34th Precinct community meeting.

May 8th, 2009 · 5 Comments · My Hood

Last week’s Inwood community meeting with the 34th Precinct brought out over 100 participants.
It was an event that was filled with tense moments and cries for peace and quiet, but most importantly pleas for help.
From the complaints of a new resident who said that she can’t even walk through her building without the stench of [...]

New York’s noisiest neighborhood is…

May 1st, 2009 · No Comments · My Hood

You guessed it: Washington Heights/Inwood.
Cars blaring at 3 A.M; clubs letting out; motorcycles and car races; salsa, merengue and bachata boom boxes; influx of restaurants on every street.

1) Washington Heights & Inwood (CB12): 10,908 complaints
2) Chinatown/Lower East Side (CB3): 7,052 complaints
