Hate Mail…

November 17th, 2009 · 21 Comments · Dominican Chronicles

Recently, I opened my email and saw two comments waiting for approval on a past post focused on Dominicans. I didn’t expect anything like what was written below, but it happens sometimes.

*By the way, I corrected your grammar and punctuation kid*

Dominican Chronicles Vol 2: What do I consider myself.

Comment #1: “Stupid n**ers, most of us true Dominicans (Cibaenos) are light skinned mulattos, mestizos and whites. Go away Haitian.”

Comment #2: “Omg you Haitian ni**er have you been to El Cibao? Most Dominicans are light skinned mulatto or white like the Puerto Ricans. Black Dominicans only live in the coasts and border towns.

You’re an Americanized Haitian pretending to be a Dominican and you know nothing about the DR you ape monkey rapist.”

I didn’t approve the comments because there’s no place for that. I usually let anyone comment what they want, but this was a bit overboard.

But you want to know something?

It really didn’t bother me one bit. Nowadays, I just brush off this level of stupidity…

Ignorance should be on the illegal drug list. It did make me giggle though.

Combination of two things: Anonymity of the internet — which makes many people bold — and ignorance.

Did they leave real email addresses or contact info? Probably not. People can send some random comment and never have to worry about it being traced back, so they get bold.

Par for the course, unfortunately, when you’re real enough to state your feelings and attach them to your name, pic, etc. as a blogger.

What is truly sad is I recognize the rhetoric. She haunts DR themed sites with this BS, and I suspect she made her way to your blog from a link at my website, so apologies. She alternately berates Dominicans for claiming to be black or white to get a rise, or express some sort of sick personal struggle.

Yes he did leave an email address but I’m not sure if it’s valid. Pretty strong words on his part, but it is what it is.

“It really didn’t bother me one bit. Nowadays, I just brush off this level of stupidity…”

    Yes.

    Dirt off your shoulder.

I didn’t find those comments amusing one bit. I am part Haitian (my mother is Haitian and Dominican, papi is Cuban). I resent the fact that the most glaring reminder of their African ancestry can conjure up such hateful ignorance in Dominicans. After reading those comments and also hearing some from family members and people in Wash Heights growing up, I’m almost ashamed to say I’m Dominican. Almost…the only reason why I won’t and can’t deny my heritage is because I was taught by my grandparents and parents to respect and cherish my heritage…all of it anglo, indian AND AFRICAN. I want my future children to be just as proud as I am of their ethnic paella, whether their skin is dark like Michelle Obama’s or light like Sammy Sosa (LOL). We all derived from the same monkeys–Adam and Eve.

Fear and ignorance all up in those comments..and typos?? Damn Claudio, you should’ve left and posted the comments in the original form…and we’re living in a post-racial what???????????????
The cowards always strike like that..on the low all annoymous and shyt….I wish they would come back

Damnn Claudio; those comments are just wrong. I’m sorry you had to experience that. Brush it off and hold your head up.

the funny thing is, mulato means half black half white, so right there the ignorant fool is admitting to blackness.

Claudio, you know your history, and unfortunately many others don’t. I’ve never been to DR, but more and more the sentiments expressed about skin color and race relations in the Dominican community gives me the impression that as a dark skin black person visiting DR would be like visiting the South. I hope i’m wrong here.

Not to draw on the comparisons but black americans fled the south to the north for economic freedom and to escape jim crow + blatant racism. I wonder how many Dominicans in their quest to move to America flee for similar reasons— To have better opportunity as a brown or dark skin dominican. To not be denied work or access to resources because of their lineage. Does anyone have any insight to this?

  • 12 admin // Nov 19, 2009 at 10:17 am

He’s an idiot of course. In DR, it doesn’t matter what color you’re, if you’re a tourist and have money you’ll be fine. If you venture out and visit places and they don’t sense you’re a tourist, you may run into some racism, but I doubt it.

You pose an interesting question. I’m not sure how many people have actually moved away from DR of dark complexion because of racism and hoping to find better ops here in USA.

I figure there were people that did so, but the lack of people identifying themselves as “black makes me think they just moved for better ops.

Dominicans need to learn from Cubans who happily embrace their African ancestry. Again, I stress, not all Cubans but many do.

Days later I am still thinking about those comments. I mean seriously, did he really think that calling you Haitian is an insult? What are we, trapped in 1982? He should have added booty scratcher to the end for real nostalgia lol

  • 14 admin // Nov 19, 2009 at 11:00 am

    Star -

Dominicans take calling people Haitian as an insult. Not all Dominicans, just ignorant ones. Booty scratcher would have made this even funnier.

Damn, I’m all late like cnn on this. I agree with everyone here. Ignorance, mis-education, sheer dumbassery. I’m glad you brushed off and moved on, Claudio. My “coastal and border town” ass has more important things to do than respond to bullshittery, so I’ll do the same.
    = )

    My blood is boiling.

This type of disrespect really upsets me.

I can’t believe the comments and I am disgusted by the names they were throwing around.

I’m sorry you had to read this stupidity from such ignorant wastes of skin.

    Stay strong, hermanito!

    I love you!

Continue educating yourself and sharing your knowledge with your audience.

People really listen to what you say.

Maybe one day you can get through to these fools.

Thank you my lovely sister. I appreciate it.

  • 18 KT // Nov 20, 2009 at 4:00 pm

One question I would raise to this hate mail poster is: how has his/her light skin made their life any better? As far I can tell there are tons of light skin Dominicans with long “straight” hair (and whatever other features they want to point out that makes them non black) that are living in poverty or struggling to make ends meet.

I think the only way to deal with these ideologies is to lead by example. We cannot force anyone to identify a certain way but you can totally challenge their perceptions.

What ignorance. It hurts on the inside to know that people still think the way that they do (although not surprising) but for strong, not-easily-provoked individuals all that we can show outwardly in response to such ignorance is laugher and a shake of the head. God will show them true humility & truth when it’s their time. before death or after. Keep strong, primo!
