Please Don’t Wear “Square-Toed Shoes.”

April 3rd, 2009 · No Comments · Fashion

No offense to anyone who belongs to this crew – but I just think they take away from a suit anytime they are put on. They take away from a pair of jeans with an un-tucked shirt or blazer as well. They just look bad man – really bad.

Whenever I look at someone with them on, they immediately look slouched, wider, and shorter. When I see someone with pointy knives on (wingtips), they look sleeker, taller, and it just goes better with a suit. I’m not into the whole “power” this look, but let’s say you make 500k a year – if a guy is wearing pointy toed shoes with the same suit you are and earns less to no one’s knowledge, he will be totally looked at differently than you. When I say differently, he will be looked at as more powerful and wealthy. Now, does it matter what people think? No. Are their rules to fashion? Absolutely not – you make your own. At the end of the day, you should just care about yourself and personal comfort – but as I’m a fashionista, I’m just trying to tell you what I feel to be “correct” and what’s “not correct.”

Remember in the first paragraph I mentioned the word “crew?” It seems like there’s a certain group of men that wear square-toed shoes. It’s like a 75-25 ratio in comparison to us wing tippers. I’ve noticed a lot of college students who go away to school wear them. You know, the ones who love to go to bars and get drunk and are part of a fraternity. But what I’ve noticed is that after graduation, whether their working as a salesperson or corporate lawyer, the trend continues. Why is that?

A lot of these men claim that these shoes are more comfortable and give them a casual feel. I never knew there was supposed to be anything casual about going to work dressed up. Maybe I’m wrong though. But this squared toe thing will never end because despite every fashion designer knowing that they are a no-no, when you’re in the business of making money, customer demand outweighs personal preference; and square toed shoes will always outweigh wingtips.

Who knows – maybe I’ll change a mind or two and get you on the wingtip side. I would hope I made a decent argument or you can just look in the mirror and try to see what I see. I don’t know – but until you see men stopping the square toed shoe love fest, they will continue to outweigh our wingtips five or even 10 to one in your favorite department and shoe stores. It’s just a fact.

P.S: The main culprits are Kenneth Cole, Aldo and Steve Madden just in case you didn’t know. So if you want to show me up and cop another one and send me a pic with you styling with them on, feel free to do so. There’s no way you can convince me unless they are chiseled a way I’ve never seen before. Till next time…
