Dominican Chronicles Vol 3: The “Bourgeoisie” Dominicans.

Tell me if I’m telling the truth or not:

Sometimes, just sometimes, you hate or even think twice about going to Mamajuana’s, Tabaco Y Ron and IL Sole (restaurants in Dyckman) on any day of the week because you’re going to run into these ‘wanna-be bourgeoise’ Dominicans. These Dominicans that will spend a ton of money, but talk to each other like their across the street from each other, but only across the table. Like the noise created by the cars and the people hanging out on the sidewalks near these establishments isn’t enough. For christ’ sakes…

In relation to money, do I know these individuals’ ‘financial status’ to call them ‘wanna-be’s?’ Not necessarily. But when I see some people blowing loads of money on dinner and coming out of a rundown apartment building on Vermileyea St five days a week, its fair to say they aren’t well off. Remember, I said ‘fair.’

What sickens me is that these are the same Dominicans that live in this neighborhood, struggling to pay rent, leasing BMW’s for no reason and waste their money flossing at a restaurant because it makes them feel/look important. Oh, and I’m not hating, its just the truth.

Now whether you are Dominican or not, you know what I’m saying is accurate. It just so happens that these folks came out of the woodworks when these restaurants began opening. You only see them behave this way in these spots with outdoor seating west of Broadway. I never really see it when its a straight indoor restaurant and East of Broadway. Not trying to build any divisions here or anything. I guess its easier to act sidity in Mamajuana on Seaman than Dyckman Express on Nagle (Dyckman Express is getting poisoned with this disease as well since it got outdoor seating).

Now, you’re probably like: ‘Damn Claudio, three chronicles and not one is positive about your own huh?’ You are absolutely right. But I rather get the bad out before I focus on the good which there’s a lot of as well just in case you thought there wasn’t.

Also, I’m not trying to say their aren’t any Dominicans in Dyckman that make good money. There are plenty, but they don’t act like this at restaurants that’s for sure.

Look, I’m not making up stories here. I frequent these restaurants plenty. I went to IL Sole twice last week and really like the place. Tabaco Y Ron I love too. I went there 2x in one week with buddies. Mamajuana used to be better, but it fell off. But one thing you can’t do in any of these restaurants whether indoors or outdoors in my opinion is eat in peace. Its possible, but more than 3 quarters of the time its not.

Now all outdoor restaurants have a level of noise. But, I’ve eaten downtown in the past and Dyckman restaurants make them look quiet. The same people who want to act all upper-crest are loud as hell. I went to IL Sole and I could barely hear my lady speak. It’s frustrating; it really is.

But they are so nearby and convenient that I will probably keep supporting them. Just next time, I will sacrifice the nice views and the cool air of the outside and keep my behind in the air conditioned inside where things are a bit more quiet…

[...] When I read the article, I still felt like there was more work to be done. Too many women, both young and old, felt it was OK to endure verbal and physical abuse. Whether it was because they had families that depended on their husbands financial support; or young women who seek out well off men and take the abuse it comes with to sit at the best tables in the local restaurants and clubs (Click here to read further on money in the Heights).
