When me, Zaida, and Jessica (thank you both) coordinated this event for Baratunde Thurston this past Monday at Locksmith Bar for his show ‘Popular Science Presents: The Future Of,’ (watch the show) we all weren’t sure how many people would show up.
We didn’t want a ton of people because Locksmith is a small bar. But we also didn’t want a small amount either.
Luckily for us, what happened in the end was something in between. Close to 20 people showed up for the event. There were even some folks from outside our neighborhood as well.
Looking back, last Monday was what I can call the first real event I was a part of coordinating. And this upcoming Saturday, I will have another one with the Wahi/Inwood Brunch + Dinner Club I created.
(Villa Patron, 6PM, 104 Dyckman Street. Contact me if interested)
Now, I’m not sure if the club I created will end up being successful; but if it isn’t, should I feel like a failure?
To date, I already have 109 members. Will I get to meet all 109 of those? Probably not. But that number has exceeded all of my expectations and I expect it to be a success.
I had people who I initially presented this idea to who had their doubts. They provided me with more pessimism than optimism. I won’t lie though, I was scared too. I wasn’t sure whether this would fall flat on its face or be something my neighborhood was ready for.
So far, it seems like it is. And to be honest, it’s kind of changed me.
Its taught me to do exactly as one of my mentors, Gerry Wilson, always told me to do, which is to stop talking about it and ‘Just F’N do it.’
Now, I have so many ideas in my head that ‘I know I will do.’ It’s no longer ideas that I had, like in the past that I’ll throw around and not take action on. Now that I’ve taken that risk, and saw the reward, I’m going to continue sticking my neck out there.
So I urge you all out there, to just take your ideas, even if their as minor as my little event, and act on them. Don’t be scared of anything, because as Sven Goran Erikkson once said:
“The greatest barrier to success is fear of failure.”
