I guess its normal that people always want to be able to label you. It’s probably because they can then define you.
The other day, I gave my ticket reselling business card to a local bar owner I know. He was like: ‘This is what you do 9 to 5?’ I said that’s just something I do on the side, but take it as serious as if it was a 9 to 5.
The following week, he saw my article in the Manhattan Times and said: ‘What else don’t I know about you?’
I used to want to only be looked upon as a writer. But in reality, I’m not just that. I have more than one title. I run a little ticket business, am a mentor to kids in my neighborhood, a writer, and I’m sure there will be more titles to come.
I’m just a lot of things and will continue to be. My 9 to 5 doesn’t define me. Everything I do outside of it is who I am…

I agree 200% I probably do things most teachers wouldn’t do outside of school anyway, but I enjoy myself. That’s the bottom line for anyone.

absolutely agree! i’m late to the post! but this is how I often feel as well. And at times I get soo frustrated that the 9-5 consumes so much of my time! lol i’m like damn it ..there is so much more I want to do, and be defined by! not many people have the flexibility you do! Do you mentor with an organization or just free lance?
