On the eleventh day of January, I must say that I’m having more fun than I’ve had in a long time.
I know you guys see the pictures and must think I call “fun” partying and going out all the time. Wrong. I barely do that. It’s just know a lot of people with birthday’s these past two months.
For the last few months of 2009, I’ve been able to spend more time getting to know myself, crash at the crib on the weekend, meet new people, reunite with old classmates, hang out with my buddies, and just feel no real obligation to anybody but “myself.”
That last thing is the best. I feel no real obligation to anybody but myself.
I’m also happy. Not completely happy with all aspects of my life, but most of them. I feel like I’m able to finally do “what I want, when I want, and how I want.”
This year, a whole bunch of things will make me happy. Instead of telling you what they are, you’ll just see them when I post them here. Just know that I’ll be busy.
I know I’m eleven days late, but I wish you all the best.
10 days ’til 26. I used to be scared of getting older. I now embrace it…

A year I started off unemployed after I got laid off from a company I loved working for.
A year where I was out of a job for five out of the first 12 months.
A year where a five year relationship ended abruptly.
A year where I still didn’t get a grip on certain vices.
A year where I still didn’t get myself started in a specific career.
A year where I said I would get back into writing, but never did.
But this past year was also…
A year where I saved more money than I ever have.
A year where I dedicated three months of my time coaching a HS basketball team and loved it.
A year where I witnessed history with the inauguration of a Black President.
A year where I had my best year as a ticket reseller.
A year where I learned more about the ticket business. I learned so much that if I really wanted to go into business for myself, I could.
A year where I sat court-side for the first time.
A year where I went to Las Vegas for a boxing fight and a stay at the Bellagio for free.
A year where I became closer to my family.
A year where I really found my way with this blog and am thankful for everyone who reads it.
A year where I learned that I don’t need a woman by my side to feel complete.
But most importantly, a year where I became more honest with myself.
You see, I don’t know what 2010 holds. Nobody does. But I can ‘honestly’ say that I’ve never been more optimistic for my/friend’s futures’ as I am now.
I’m tired of hearing the same people who told me ‘06,07,08, and 09 would be their takeover year, saying it about 2010 when they aren’t putting in the necessary work to make it happen.

Not even the Spurs losing to Dallas in Game 7 of the 2006 Western Conference Semi’s, the Fisher shot, or Padres getting swept in 98 WS beats this as the worst sports moment I’ve ever had as a fan.

Just a few days ago, the NY Times had an editorial piece on an issue that I like to say (and the paper I formerly worked with) I brought to their attention three years ago.
After I wrote about this topic for the NY Amsterdam News, guys like Errol Louis at the NY Daily News and writers at the Times and NY Sun wrote about it the following week.
I was kind of jealous because they were on such a larger scale, but me writing that article brought it to their attention, which in turn resulted to years of debate and this change. Though I may not be pleased with the full result, at least they acknowledged there was a problem.
After almost five years of fighting over this unjust act by MCI and the prison system, the high courts in the state rejected the suits of family members who wanted to recoup funds for the unfair charges.
They rejected it 5 to 1 which struck me as ludicrous.
But despite these poor families and inmates not getting all the money they’ve lost, I’m glad that they brought the lawsuit because now MCI and these prisons can’t abuse the system any longer.
These exorbitant rates caused severe depression in many inmates and empty pockets in the families who yearned to speak with their incarcerated sons or daughters.
I’m glad NY State saw this injustice that was occurring and decided to fix it.

I’ll be honest, it was tough trying to come up with five things every week to accomplish. I just don’t have that much on my plate at the moment.
Instead, I think it’s easier to compile a list for a full month.
Here are my goals:
- Apply to be a member of Community Board 12.
- Finish my application to serve as a mentor at Big Brothers, Big Sister’s.
- Finish Bill Simmons’ “Book of Basketball.”
- Review my ticket business spreadsheets for the whole year and see how I did in comparison to last year.
- Have two Wahi/Inwood Brunch & Supper Club outings for December.
- Attend the Harlem Brunch & Supper Club outing for December.
- Reach out to friends who are writers and ask them for advice on getting back into freelancing like a pro-fe-ssional (like I used to…kind of lost my confidence in this field).
- Pick up my college diploma from Brooklyn College. Yes, I know, how haven’t I picked this up yet? Just haven’t had time to be honest and every day I’m off, they are closed.
- Stick to working out 3x a week and stick to my no beer/ no porto/ no pizza diet (three of my vices).
- Cut down on the dates. I’m not interested in paying for dates with women I’m not looking to be in a relationship with (though they may be nice eye candy). It’s just a waste of time and money; especially money that can go to Banco Pop.
They can just come to the crib, crack open the Goya and get to work in the kitchen.
Just kidding to my female readers.
- Buy a new 40 inch and over TV. If anyone has any recommendations, please feel free to drop me a line. I would love to do it online, but I have this in-store coupon for Best Buy. Those fools are going to keep me in the store for an extra hour trying to get a damn protection plan. SMH.
- Was supposed to go to LA this month, but not anymore. Probably re-scheduling for much later in the year. January is Super Bowl, February is All-Star Game and March is Pac-Mayweather. I’ll probably be attending all of those for the company so I won’t have time.
- Begin the process of learning CSS and HTML.
See you in January ‘10 for the review of this month and goals for the first month of the new year.
