If you didn’t know…

I’m a San Diego Padres fan. I know, I’m so late on this. I didn’t even give a season preview and we are already nine games in and I haven’t even talked about my boys.

As I’m typing this, we are whipping the Mets and on our way to another series victory. We will probably move to 7-3 as long as the bullpen doesn’t blow it.

Just to give you a little background…

All my favorite teams were born out of 1 player. Those guys were all class acts and great at their sport; David Robinson (Spurs), Barry Sanders (Lions), and Tony Gwynn (Padres). I’m no band-wagon folks. As obvious from my picks, I’ve gone through some heartbreak.

The Lions have been a mess forever – even while Barry was there. The Padres went to the World Series in 98 and we got robbed by the umpires in Game 1 on that missed strike call, but whatever. We also won the division four times since I could comprehend baseball. But we also lost to St. Louis three straight years in the playoffs and that really hurt…bad. As for the Spurs, they’ve given me the least heartbreak as I have 4 rings with them. But don’t think the Manu foul on Dirk or the Hakeem demolishing of David and those Lakers sweeps didn’t hurt; because they did.

As for my Padres, I don’t expect much from them this year. We are 7-3, but there are 150 games left to play. Plus, we have the Dodgers in our division and the pitching heavy Giants. It looks good now, but not long-term. We will probably lose Peavy soon and we aren’t pulling in the revenue we need to to keep these players. Our front-office has been a mess since the Khalil Greene signing and our best pitcher after Peavy is Chris Young. He’s good, but getting up their in years.

If the Padres finish in the top 2 of this division, I’ll be elated. If they win the division, I’d be shocked. If they finish in last place, I won’t be disappointed. We aren’t expected to go anywhere anyways.
