Writing on the train…

Is the only place I find myself writing away.

I know – how the hell can I write in a packed train in the morning with the noise and commuters all around me? Somehow I just can. But I don’t write on a laptop or a notebook, I write on my blackberry. I found that when I get home from a long day of work, its just difficult for me to keep focus on the computer without opening up a bunch of other tabs to other websites.

When I’m on the train, I’m underground and have no reception to text, make a phone-call or go to a web-page. So that 40 minute commute at 8:30 A.M. to 42nd Street and the 6:30 P.M. commute back to Dyckman affords me at least s 1000 words total (500 each way). Then, when I get home I can just email it to my address and proofread it on MS Word and paste it on my blog or send it away to a magazine, website or paper to consider.

I wonder if i’m the only one who does this?

It doesn’t matter to me whether I’m sitting or standing. But, at a time, it did matter. I used to be shy about writing while sitting down. I always looked out the corner of my eyes to see if someone was reading my screen. Once I saw a glance, I scrolled up fast. No longer am I like that – if you want to read my stuff – be my guest.

I recommend this to anyone on the train. I doubt anyone my age reads a physical paper anymore on the train. There’s really no room to spread out the Times or even the Daily News. If you have a smartphone and your a writer, you should definitely take the time out your commute to brainstorm and write up some stuff. There’s really no where you can find better inspiration than on the platform and inside the train amongst the many different people of this city.

Now, let’s see if I can write a book on my Blackberry; that might be my next goal. I just have to find a topic…

I am absolutely the same! Throughout school and in my life today, whenever I have writer’s block I get on the train or bus and am able to plow right through it. I think there is something soothing about the motion that clears my mind. A lot of babies are soothed that way as well, proving me to just be a big baby as I had always thought!
